What does NBD mean in a text message?
No big deal. It plays down whatever has just been mentioned, either to reassure someone that they need not apologise or to brush off a favour.
Is NBD ever sarcastic?
Often, yes. Tacked onto something genuinely impressive, it is mock modesty, as in 'just finished my first novel, nbd'. The gap between the achievement and the shrug is the joke.
Can I use NBD at work?
Only in casual internal chat, and only with people you know well. In email or with clients, write 'no problem' or 'not a problem at all' instead.
