What is the difference between an SDS and an MSDS?
They serve the same purpose, but SDS is the newer standardised format with a fixed 16-section structure under the Globally Harmonized System. MSDS was the older, inconsistently formatted version, and workplaces were required to switch to SDS.
How many sections does an SDS have?
Sixteen, always in the same order, so you can jump straight to the part you need. Section 2 covers hazards, section 4 first aid, section 8 exposure controls and protection, and section 13 disposal.
Who has to provide an SDS?
The manufacturer, importer or supplier of the chemical must supply one, and the employer must keep it accessible to every worker who might be exposed. It has to be provided free of charge.
