Etymology

First recorded in 1541, acclamation was borrowed from Latin acclāmātiō, acclāmātiōnis (“calling, exclamation, shout of approval”), from acclamo (“shout approval or disapproval of, shout out at”), formed from ad (“toward”) and clamo (“cry out”). Compare French acclamation.
