An unadapted borrowing from Latin afflātus (“breath, blowing or breathing on, spiritual inspiration”), from afflō (“to blow, breathe on or towards”) plus -tus (forming action nouns), itself from ad- (“to, towards”) plus flō (“breathe, blow”). See also af-.
