Etymology

A Late Middle English back-formation from the plural alps, which arrived via French from Latin Alpes (“high mountains, especially those of Switzerland”). Compare Old Saxon elbon (“Alps”), Old High German Alpūn (“Alps”), and Old High German alba (“alp, mountain”).
