Etymology

From analgesia, meaning ‘absence of pain’, with the suffix -ic; analgesia itself comes from New Latin, from Ancient Greek ἀν- (an-), meaning ‘without’, and ἄλγησις (álgēsis), meaning ‘sense of pain’, from ἄλγος (álgos), meaning ‘pain’. Compare -algia.
