In its first sense, it derives directly from Hebrew אֲרִי (arí, "lion"); compare Yiddish לייב (leyb, "Leib"), English Leo and Leon, French Léo and Léon, Czech Lev, Polish Lew, Russian Лев (Lev), and Ukrainian Лев (Lev).
