Etymology

Comes from Middle English bistillen, bystillen ("to silence"), equivalent to be- + still. It may instead be an alteration of an earlier Middle English istillen, ȝestillen ("to make still, calm"), from Old English ġestillan ("to calm, quieten, pacify, stop").
