It comes from Old French ars bouterez (noun, literally "supporting arcs"), from bouterez (adjective), the oblique plural of bouteret (rare in the singular), from Frankish *bôtan, from Proto-Germanic *bautaną ("to push"). It is ultimately cognate with beat.
