Etymology

The word was borrowed from Late Latin cannula, canula, meaning "tubular surgical instrument", which itself came from Latin cannula ("reed; small reed- or tube-shaped object"). This was built from canna ("cane; reed; object made from or shaped like a cane or reed") plus -ula, the feminine form of the diminutive suffix -ulus. Canna traces back to Ancient Greek κᾰ́ννᾰ (kắnnă, "reed"), from Akkadian qanûm ("cane; reed"). The plural cannulae is likewise borrowed from Late Latin cannulae.
