Etymology

Came into English through Middle English, borrowed from Latin Capricornus, itself formed from capra ("goat") and cornū ("horn") as a calque of Ancient Greek Αἰγοκέρως (Aigokérōs, "horned goat; name of constellation"), which was in turn a calque of Akkadian suḫurmāšu, from Sumerian ᴹᵁᴸSUḪUR.MAŠ ("the Goat-Fish; name of constellation").
