Etymology

Came into English from French cartographie, from carte (“map”) — ultimately from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs, “map”) — plus -graphie (“-graphy”), from γράφω (gráphō, “write”); it can also be analysed as carto- (“map”) plus -graphy.
