Etymology
From Portuguese Colombo, a modification, under the influence of the Italian surname below, of Sinhalese කොලොන් තොට (kolon toṭa), literally “port on the river Kelani”. Other theories derive the name from Veddah; see w:Colombo § Etymology for more.
