confrere
The origin and history of confrere.
Etymology
Came into English from Old French confrere, from Latin confrāter. The word, originally used only in its second sense, fell out of use in the 17th century and reappeared in the mid 18th century as a fresh borrowing of Modern French confrère, which is where the first sense comes from.
