Etymology
Inherited from Middle English Coventre, which came from Old English Cofentrēo, Cofantrēo, of obscure origin. It is thought to derive from an Anglo-Saxon named Cofa, giving Cofantrēo (literally “Cofa's tree”). Tradition has often linked it to English covenant, though this has no basis outside the word's actual history.
