Etymology

Borrowed from French diamanté ("adorned with diamonds"), the past participle of diamanter ("adorn with diamonds"). That verb comes from diamant ("diamond"), which traces back to the oblique stem of Ancient Greek ἀδάμᾱς (adámās, "hard metal, diamond").
