Etymology

Dunnock came into English from Middle English donek or dunok, which developed from Old English *dunnuc, equivalent to dun, ‘brownish grey’, plus the diminutive suffix -ock. Compare Old High German doniklīn, meaning ‘hedge-sparrow; dunnock’, and also compare ruddock.
