From Middle English Duchelond (“Germany”), from Middle Dutch duutsche land or from late Middle High German diutschland, both equivalent to Dutch + -land. Cognate with West Frisian Dútslân (“Germany”), Dutch Duitsland (“Germany”), German Deutschland (“Germany”), Swedish Tyskland (“Germany”), Icelandic Þýskaland (“Germany”).
