Etymology

Comes from Middle English enchantour, from Old French enchanteor (Modern French enchanteur), from Latin incantātor ("enchanter; spellcaster; conjurer"), from incantāre ("to sing, to consecrate with spells"). It is a doublet of incantator, and on the surface analyses as enchant plus -er.
