Etymology

Comes from Scots Erse, meaning "Irish", from the earlier Ersche, Ersch, itself a contraction of Erisch, Erische ("Irish"), from Middle English Erische, Irische, Irisch ("Irish"). It is a doublet of Irish. Compare also Scots Irisch.
