Etymology

First recorded in the 1590s, from French esplanade, meaning "clear, level space", from either Spanish esplanada (explanada), a form of esplanar ("to flatten, to make level"), or Italian spianata, a form of spianare (with the same meaning), both going back to Latin explānāre, the source also of English explain; compare also plain ("level area, to flatten").
