evitable
The origin and history of evitable.
Etymology
This came into English from Middle French evitable (modern French évitable), which traces to Latin ēvītābilis (“avoidable”), formed from ēvītō (“to avoid”) and -bilis (“-able”, able or worthy to be). Ēvītō in turn derives from ē- (“out”) and vītō (“to avoid, evade; to shun”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dwidʰeh₁- (“separate, set apart”), a compound of *dwi- (“two”) and *dʰeh₁- (“to put”).
