Etymology
Comes from Spanish Fernando, a contraction of Ferdinando, corresponding to English Ferdinand. It goes back to Proto-Germanic *fardiz (“journey”) or *friþuz (“peace”), combined with *nanþaz (“daring”), itself from the root of *ninþaną (“to be daring”).
