Etymology

Taken from French fontanelle, which came from Old French fontenelle, a diminutive formed from fontaine (“fountain, spring”) and -elle; this in turn goes back to Late Latin fontāna, from Latin fontānus, from font- and -ānus. Analysed at surface level, it breaks down as font + -an + -elle.
