Giza

The origin and history of Giza.

Etymology

Comes from Egyptian Arabic اَلْجِيزَة (il-Gīza), though the origin beyond that is uncertain. Al-Maqrizi traces it to Classical Syriac ܓܸܣܵܐ (gessā, “side”); Peust proposes a Persian source in دز (dez, “castle”); and Everett-Heath suggests an Egyptian origin in r-gs-ḥr (“on the side of the high one (pyramid)”).
