Etymology

Comes from Middle English heddysman, equivalent to head, -s- and -man. It is cognate with Scots hedisman and heidisman ("head man; chief; commander"). Compare also Danish høvedsmand ("captain"), Swedish hövitsman ("captain"), Icelandic höfuðsmaður ("captain") and German Hauptmann ("captain").
