Etymology

Came into English from Late Latin heteroclitus, which traces to Ancient Greek ἑτερόκλιτος (heteróklitos), formed from ἕτερος (héteros, “other, another, different”) and κλίνω (klínō, “lean, incline”); this last word goes back to Proto-Indo-European *ḱley-.
