Etymology

Borrowed from Dutch houwitser, itself from German Haubitze, which came from Middle High German haufniz, from Czech houfnice — formed from houf (“flock, crowd”) and -nice. The Czech word houf in turn goes back to Middle High German hufe (“heap”), from Old High German hūfo.
