The origin and history of Jared.
Etymology
The name traces back through Latin Iared to Ancient Greek Ἰαρέδ (Iaréd) and further to Biblical Hebrew יֶרֶד (yéred). It is often explained as coming from the root י־ר־ד (y-r-d), which forms words to do with descending (see Jordan and ירדן for more); some read the Book of Enoch as suggesting that the biblical Jared was so named because two hundred angels descended from Heaven to Mount Hermon in his time. Alternatively, it is sometimes traced instead to the root ר־ד־ה (r-d-), which forms words to do with ruling.
