Etymology

As a German surname Klöss, it comes from the personal name Kloss, a shortened form of Nikolaus (compare Klos). It can also be a German surname from the noun Kloß ("lump, block"), or a Germanised form of various Slavic surnames — Upper Sorbian kłós, Lower Sorbian kłos and Polish kłos — all meaning "ear or spike of cereal" (see also Klos).
