Etymology

Used by Alfred Hitchcock as an arbitrary Scottish surname. The name itself comes from Ulster, formed from Mc- (“son of”), Irish dubh (“black”), and Irish Fionn (literally “fairheaded”). See also Wikipedia's MacGuffin § History and use.
