This is an alteration or clipping of mama; compare Scots mam, Early Scots mame (“mother”) and mamye (“wet nurse”), Saterland Frisian Määme (“mother”), and West Frisian mem (“mother”). Alternatively, it may have been conserved from, or influenced by, an earlier Brythonic language.
