Comes from New Latin marginālia (compare margināle, a neuter singular adjective/noun), itself the Medieval Latin neuter plural of marginālis (“on the periphery”), which traces back to Latin margō (“border, edge”). Taken at face value, it looks like marginal plus -ia. Compare margin.
