Etymology

Formed from match and -less, modelled on, or partly a continuation of, Middle English makeless (“having no peer or equal, matchless”), itself equivalent to make + -less. Compare Swedish makalös (“incomparable, matchless”) and Danish mageløs (“matchless”).
