Etymology
Developed from the earlier form Matheu, which came from Old French Mathieu, from Latin Matthaeus, from Ancient Greek Ματθαῖος (Matthaîos), ultimately from Aramaic מַתַּי (mattay). Compare Hebrew מַתִּתְיָהוּ (mattiṯyāhū), literally 'gift of the Lord'. It is a doublet of Mattathias.
