Etymology

This is a learned borrowing from Ancient Greek μετεωρολογία (meteōrología), which came from μετέωρα (metéōra, "celestial phenomena"), itself formed as a noun from the neuter plural of μετέωρος (metéōros, "high in the sky"), plus -λογία (-logía, "study of"). On the surface, English meteor ("atmospheric phenomenon") combines with -ology ("study of"). The word is first recorded in 1563.
