Comes from Middle English mightli, myȝtly, from Old English mihtelīċ ("possible, able, capable"), from Proto-West Germanic *mahtilīk, from Proto-Germanic *mahtilīkaz, *mahtulīkaz; equivalent to might plus -ly. It is cognate with Swedish maktlig ("powerful").
