Etymology
This name has two strands. One is simply new + house. The other is a calque of German Neuhaus: it derives from Neuhaus (compare Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr.), an anglicization of German Neuhaus, itself from neu + Haus. It is cognate with Catalan Casanova, French Maisonneuve, German Neuhaus, Italian Casanova, and Occitan Casanova.
