Etymology

Nicotiana is a learned borrowing from the taxonomic name Nicotiāna, formed from (Jean) Nicot (the French ambassador to Portugal, who sent seeds back to France in 1561) plus -iāna (an adjective-forming suffix, the feminine of -iānus).
