Etymology

Arose 1425–75 as late Middle English ostentacioun, borrowed from Middle French ostentation and its source Latin ostentātiō, ostentātiōnem. This corresponds to ostentātus, the past participle of ostentāre, to display or exhibit, a frequentative of ostendere, meaning "to present, display", plus -iōn. By surface analysis it breaks down as ostent + -ation.
