Etymology

A learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ὀστρακισμός (ostrakismós), meaning "banishment by means of voting with pot shards". This is formed from ὀστρακίζω (ostrakízō), meaning "ostracize", and -ισμός (-ismós, "-ism"), and traces back to ὄστρακον (óstrakon), meaning "clay pot".
