Etymology

Came into English via Middle English overmuche, overmuchel, from Old English ofermiċel, ofermyċel (“overmuch, excessive”), equivalent to over- plus much. Compare overmany and overmore; it is a doublet of overmickle, and cognate with Scots over-mekill (“overmuch, excessive”), Old Norse ofrmikill (“overmuch, excessive”) and Icelandic ofmikill (“overmuch, excessive”).
