Etymology

Traced to Middle English *oxeslyppe, which developed from Old English oxanslyppe (“oxlip”), itself formed from oxan, the genitive of oxa (“ox”), and slyppe (“paste, slimy substance”). Compare cowslip, formed in a similar way.
