Borrowed from Marathi पाटील (pāṭīl), meaning "village head", or by way of Kannada ಪಾಟೀಲ (pāṭīla), also meaning "village head". This comes from Old Marathi ???? (paṭaila), from Prakrit ???????? (paṭṭaïlla), from Sanskrit पट्टकिल (paṭṭakila). A doublet of Patel.
