Etymology

The word joins phenomenon with the suffix -logy, meaning the study of. Phenomenon itself comes from an Ancient Greek word for a thing that appears to view, so phenomenology is literally the study of what shows itself to the mind. The term was first used in the eighteenth century in the circle around the philosopher Christian Wolff.
