Etymology

Traced to Ancient Greek φώνημα (phṓnēma, "sound"), which came from φωνέω (phōnéō, "to sound"), itself from φωνή (phōnḗ, "sound"). On the surface it can be analysed as phone ("speech sound") plus -eme ("unit").
