Etymology

Comes from Spanish pimiento ("bell pepper; later any pepper"), which traces back to Latin pigmentum ("coloring; colorful thing"), from pingō ("to paint") plus -mentum (a suffix marking instruments and results of actions). It is a doublet of pigment, piment, and pimento.
