Etymology

It comes from Middle English runel, rennel, rinel, from Old English rynel ("that which runs; runner; stream"), from Proto-Germanic *runilaz, equivalent to run + -el. Cognate with Scots rinel, rinnal ("stream; runnel") and Swedish rännel ("runner; runnel").
