Etymology

The word comes from Middle English salver, recorded only in the sense of "ointment box", which developed from Old English *sealfere (“salver, one who anoints”); this is equivalent to salve + -er. It is cognate with Dutch zalver (“salver”) and German Salber (“salver”).
