Etymology

A UK term from the late 19th century, borrowed from Yiddish שלימזל (shlimazl, “misfortune”), which goes back to Middle High German slim (“crooked”) and Hebrew מַזָּל (mazzāl, “luck”). It is a cognate of US English schlimazel (“unlucky person”); compare German Schlamassel.
